Chengdu Itinerary Planning
Chengdu is best experienced over 4-5 days at a relaxed pace, matching the city's laid-back atmosphere. Day 1: Giant Panda Breeding Center (morning, arrive by 8am), Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Street in the afternoon. Day 2: Leshan Giant Buddha day trip (1.5 hours by high-speed train or bus). Day 3: Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Qingyang Palace, and Kuanzhai Alley in the afternoon. Day 4: Renmin Park teahouse morning, Sichuan Museum, and a hotpot dinner. Day 5 (optional): Day trip to Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mount Qingcheng. For a longer stay, add Jiuzhaigou (fly or 2-day drive) or Daocheng Yading for alpine wilderness.
Giant Panda Breeding Center Guide
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world's largest panda facility, home to over 50 giant pandas and red pandas. The key to a great visit is timing: arrive at 7:30am (opening time) when pandas are most active during their morning feeding. By late morning, most pandas are sleeping. The base is large; take the electric cart (10 RMB) to the farthest enclosures first (Sunshine and Moonlight Nurseries), then walk back. The red panda enclosure allows you to walk among free-roaming red pandas — a highlight. The panda museum and cinema provide educational context. For the ultimate experience, book the panda volunteer program (800-1,200 RMB) where you can clean enclosures and prepare panda cakes. Avoid weekends and Chinese holidays when crowds are overwhelming.
Leshan Giant Buddha Day Trip
The Leshan Giant Buddha, at 71m tall, is the world's largest stone Buddha statue, carved into a cliff at the confluence of three rivers. From Chengdu, take the high-speed train to Leshan Station (1 hour) or a direct bus (2 hours). Two ways to see the Buddha: from the river (boat tour, 70 RMB, 30 minutes) or from the cliff path (80 RMB entrance, 2-3 hours). The cliff path descends alongside the Buddha's body, offering close-up views of the carved toes (each large enough for a person to sit on). The boat tour gives the best full-body perspective. Combine both for the complete experience. The nearby Leshan food scene is excellent — try the sweet-skin duck and bobo chicken (skewers in spicy broth). Return to Chengdu the same day, or stay overnight to visit the Wuyou Temple across the river.
Chengdu Teahouse Culture
Chengdu's teahouse culture is legendary — the city has over 1,000 teahouses where locals spend hours drinking tea, playing mahjong, and socializing. Renmin Park's Heming Teahouse is the most famous, where you can experience ear-cleaning service (a Chengdu tradition) while sipping jasmine tea. For a more upscale experience, visit the Shu Feng Ya Yun teahouse for Sichuan Opera and face-changing (bianlian) performance. The People's Park teahouse is where you'll see the marriage market — parents displaying their children's profiles on umbrellas. Order gaiwan tea (covered bowl tea) and refill with hot water throughout your stay (20-30 RMB for unlimited refills). The teahouse is the best place to experience Chengdu's philosophy of slow living.
Sichuan Hotpot and Street Food
Sichuan hotpot is a culinary adventure — a bubbling pot of chili oil and Sichuan peppercorns where you cook your own meats, vegetables, and tofu. For beginners, order the yuanyang (half-and-half) pot with a spicy side and a mild mushroom/bone broth side. Recommended restaurants: Haidilao (excellent service, English menu), Long Chao Shou (traditional), and Yu's Hotpot (local favorite). Beyond hotpot, try mapo tofu (silken tofu in spicy meat sauce), dan dan noodles (noodles with spicy sesame sauce), and kung pao chicken. For street food, visit the Yulin market or Qintai Road for chuanchuan (skewer hotpot), rabbit head (a Chengdu specialty for the adventurous), and sweet water noodles. The Sichuan Cuisine Museum in Pi County offers cooking classes where you can learn to make classic dishes.
Getting to Chengdu
By Air
Chengdu has two airports: Shuangliu International Airport (CTU, 16km southwest) and Tianfu International Airport (TFU, 50km southeast). Shuangliu serves many domestic and some international routes; Tianfu opened in 2021 and handles additional domestic and international flights. Both airports have metro connections: Line 10 to Shuangliu (15 minutes) and Line 18 to Tianfu (50 minutes). Airport shuttle buses run to the city center. Taxis from Shuangliu cost 50-70 RMB; from Tianfu 100-130 RMB. Direct international flights connect to Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia, and North America.
By Train
Chengdu East Railway Station is the high-speed rail hub, with trains to Xi'an (3-4h), Chongqing (1.5h), Leshan (1h), Emeishan (1.5h), and Beijing (7-8h). Chengdu South Station serves some high-speed routes. The Chengdu-Lhasa train (Qinghai-Tibet route) departs from Chengdu Station, taking 43 hours. High-speed trains to Jiuzhaigou (Huanglong Station) opened in 2024. Metro Lines 2 and 7 connect Chengdu East Station to the city center. Book via 12306.cn; foreign passports supported.
By Bus
Buses to Leshan depart from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station (2 hours, 50 RMB). Buses to Jiuzhaigou depart from Chadianzi Bus Station (8-10 hours, 170 RMB) — flights are recommended instead. Buses to Mount Emei depart from Xinnanmen (2 hours). Buses to Dujiangyan depart from Chengdu Railway Station bus hub (1 hour, 25 RMB). For Daocheng Yading, flights from Chengdu (1 hour) are strongly recommended over the 2-day bus journey.
Local Transport
Chengdu's metro has 13+ lines covering all major attractions, including the Panda Base (Line 3 + shuttle bus), Kuanzhai Alley (Line 4), and Wuhou Shrine (Line 3). Fares are 2-10 RMB. Taxis start at 8-9 RMB. Didi ride-hailing is widely available with English app support. For the Panda Base, take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station, then the free shuttle bus or a taxi (10 RMB). Bicycle sharing is convenient for the city center. The Chengdu Tianfu Tong transport card works on metro and buses.
