Qinghai Lake and Surroundings

Qinghai Lake, at 3,200m elevation, is China's largest saltwater lake, covering 4,500 sq km. The lake is surrounded by rolling grasslands, rapeseed flower fields (golden in July), and distant snow-capped mountains. The classic circuit is a 2-3 day driving loop: Day 1: Xining to Erlangjian Peninsula (the lake's most scenic peninsula, 2.5 hours), then to Chaka Town. Day 2: Chaka Salt Lake in the morning, then drive to Qilian Mountains. Day 3: Qilian grasslands and Zhuo'er Mountain viewpoint, return to Xining. Cycling around the lake (360km) is a popular 3-4 day adventure; bike rentals are available in Xining. The best season is June-August when flowers bloom and the weather is mild. Bring altitude sickness medication and sun protection.

Chaka Salt Lake: The Sky Mirror

Chaka Salt Lake is one of China's most surreal landscapes — a vast salt flat where the surface becomes a perfect mirror of the sky on calm, sunny days. The "sky mirror" effect is best at midday when the sun is directly overhead (11am-2pm). Walk onto the salt crust via designated pathways; the salt is thick enough to walk on safely. Wear shoe covers (provided with ticket) to protect your shoes from salt. The lake changes character throughout the day: pinkish at dawn, mirror-bright at midday, and golden at sunset. A small train takes visitors to the lake's center. The nearby Chaka Salt Lake Museum explains the salt harvesting process. Combine with a visit to the larger Qarhan Salt Lake (near Golmud) for an even more otherworldly experience. Bring sunglasses — the salt reflection is blindingly bright.

Ta'er Monastery (Kumbum)

Ta'er Monastery, 25km from Xining, is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1560 at the birthplace of Tsongkhapa (founder of the Gelug school), the monastery complex includes 52 halls and over 400 monk quarters. Highlights include the Great Hall of Meditation (with its silver, gold, and jewel-encrusted stupa), the Eight Stupas, and the butter sculpture exhibition hall (Tibetan butter sculptures are a unique art form). Visit during the morning chanting session (around 9am) for a powerful spiritual atmosphere. The monastery is also famous for its "tree of great merit" — a sandalwood tree said to have grown from Tsongkhapa's umbilical blood. Photography is restricted inside halls; always ask first. Respect pilgrims performing prostrations.

Xining and Dongguan Mosque

Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, is the starting point for all Qinghai travels and the gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The city sits at 2,275m — a good place to begin altitude acclimatization. The Dongguan Mosque, one of the four great mosques in Northwest China, blends Chinese and Islamic architecture with a green dome and Chinese-style roof. Visit on Friday for the noon prayer when thousands gather. The mosque's exhibition hall covers the history of Islam in China. For food, explore the Dongguan Street night market — try hand-pulled lamb noodles, lamb skewers, and yogurt. The Qinghai Provincial Museum offers exhibits on local ethnic cultures (Tibetan, Hui, Tu, Salar, and Monguor). The nearby Beichan Temple offers panoramic views of Xining.

Qinghai-Tibet Railway Journey

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Xining to Lhasa is one of the world's greatest train journeys, crossing the Tibetan Plateau at elevations up to 5,072m. The 22-hour journey passes through landscapes seen nowhere else: vast grasslands with yak herds, snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and the Tanggula Pass. Book soft sleeper class (4-berth cabin) for comfort; oxygen is supplied above 4,000m. The train has a dining car, but bring your own snacks and instant noodles. The most scenic section is between Golmud and Lhasa (daylight hours on most departures). Sit on the left side (facing forward) for the best views of the mountains. Book via 12306.cn well in advance — tickets are in high demand, especially in summer. The train allows gradual altitude acclimatization but can still cause symptoms; carry Diamox and oxygen canisters.

Getting to Qinghai

By Air

Xining Caojiabao Airport (XNN) is 32km from the city center, with flights from Beijing (2.5h), Shanghai (3h), Xi'an (1.5h), Chengdu (1.5h), and Lhasa (2h). The airport shuttle bus runs to the city center every 30 minutes (25 RMB, 45 minutes). Taxis cost approximately 80-100 RMB. For Qinghai Lake, the most practical approach is to hire a car with a driver from Xining (500-800 RMB/day) or join a tour. There are no commercial airports near Qinghai Lake.

By Train

Xining Railway Station is the starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway to Lhasa (22 hours). High-speed trains connect Xining to Lanzhou (1.5h), Xi'an (4.5h), and Beijing (8-10h). The Xining-Lanzhou high-speed line connects to the national high-speed rail network. For Qinghai Lake, there is no direct train; take a bus or hire a car from Xining. The train to Lhasa is extremely popular — book soft sleeper tickets via 12306.cn at least 5 days in advance. Foreign passports supported with online verification.

By Bus

Buses from Xining to Qinghai Lake (Erlangjian scenic area) depart from Xining Bus Station (3 hours, 40 RMB). Buses to Chaka Salt Lake depart from Xining (4 hours). Buses to Qilian and Menyuan (for rapeseed flowers and grasslands) depart from Xining West Bus Station. For the Qinghai Lake circuit, hiring a car with a driver is strongly recommended over buses, as attractions are spread out and public transport is infrequent. Your hotel can arrange car hire (500-800 RMB/day including driver and fuel).

Local Transport

Within Xining, buses cost 1 RMB and cover all city attractions. Taxis start at 8 RMB. Didi ride-hailing is available. For Qinghai Lake and surrounding attractions, a hired car with driver is the standard transport — arrange through your hotel or a travel agency. Self-driving is possible with a Chinese driving license; car rentals are available at the airport. The roads around Qinghai Lake are well-paved but long; ensure your driver is experienced with high-altitude driving. Bring snacks and water for long drives between attractions.
