Silk Road Itinerary Planning
The Chinese section of the Silk Road spans from Xi'an to Kashgar, requiring 10-14 days for a comprehensive journey. Days 1-2: Xi'an (Terracotta Warriors, Muslim Quarter, City Wall). Days 3-4: Lanzhou (Bingling Temple) and Xiahe (Labrang Monastery). Days 5-6: Zhangye (Danxia Rainbow Mountains) and Jiayuguan (Great Wall western gate). Days 7-8: Dunhuang (Mogao Caves, Echoing Sand Dunes, Crescent Lake). Days 9-10: Turpan (Flaming Mountains, Jiaohe Ruins, Karez wells). Days 11-12: Urumqi (Heavenly Lake) and Kashgar (Old Town, Sunday Bazaar). For a shorter trip, focus on the Gansu Corridor (Xi'an-Lanzhou-Dunhuang, 7 days). The optimal season is May-October; September offers the most comfortable weather.
Mogao Caves: Buddhist Art Treasury
The Mogao Caves near Dunhuang are the world's richest treasury of Buddhist art, with 492 cave temples containing 45,000 sq meters of murals and 2,400 painted statues spanning 1,000 years (4th-14th centuries). Book tickets at least 7 days in advance via the official website (mogao.net.cn) — only 6,000 visitors per day are admitted. The standard ticket (180 RMB) includes 8 caves with a guide; the digital center shows panoramic films of inaccessible caves. For a deeper experience, the "Special Visit" ticket (220 RMB) includes rarely opened caves with exceptional art. Key caves: Cave 96 (the 35.5m Giant Buddha), Cave 17 (the Library Cave where the Dunhuang manuscripts were discovered in 1900), and Cave 257 (the famous nine-colored deer mural). Photography is prohibited inside caves to protect the art. Visit in the morning when lighting is best.
Dunhuang Desert Adventures
The Echoing Sand Dunes (Mingsha Shan) and Crescent Lake (Yueya Quan) are Dunhuang's iconic desert landscape. The dunes rise 170m and "sing" when the wind blows across the sand. Activities include camel riding (100 RMB, 40 minutes), sand sliding (free with board rental), and dune bashing in 4WD vehicles. Crescent Lake, a spring-fed lake that has survived 2,000 years in the desert, is best photographed from the dune ridge above. Visit at sunrise or sunset for the most dramatic light and cooler temperatures. For a deeper desert experience, book an overnight camping trip on the dunes with a bonfire dinner and stargazing. The Dunhuang Night Market offers excellent local food — try donkey meat noodles (a local specialty), yellow noodles, and apricot tea. The Dunhuang Museum provides context for the Silk Road history.
Kashgar: The Silk Road's Western Gateway
Kashgar, China's westernmost city, has been a Silk Road trading post for over 2,000 years and retains a distinctly Central Asian character. The Kashgar Old Town is a maze of narrow streets and traditional Uyghur courtyard homes, centered around the 15th-century Id Kah Mosque — the largest mosque in China. Visit the mosque in the morning (avoid prayer times). The Kashgar Sunday Bazaar (Grand Bazaar) is one of Asia's most vibrant markets, with traders selling everything from silk and spices to livestock and handmade knives. For the livestock market (held on Sundays), arrive early to see the lively trading of sheep, cattle, and horses. Try Uyghur cuisine: polo (pilaf with lamb and carrots), naan bread, dapanji (big plate chicken), and laghman (hand-pulled noodles with vegetables). The Abakh Hoja Tomb, a beautiful Islamic mausoleum, is worth a visit. Kashgar is the starting point for trips on the Karakoram Highway to Pakistan.
Zhangye Danxia: Rainbow Mountains
The Zhangye Danxia Landform, also known as the Rainbow Mountains, is a geological wonder where mineral-rich sandstone layers have been uplifted and eroded into vivid red, orange, yellow, and blue stripes. The park has four viewing platforms accessible by park bus. Platform 1 offers the broadest panorama; Platform 4 has the most vivid colors and is the best sunset viewpoint. The colors are most intense 1-2 hours after rain and during golden hour (1-2 hours before sunset). Allow 3-4 hours for the visit. The nearby Binggou Danxia (ice valley) offers a different style of rock formations — towering pillars and ravines. Zhangye itself has the Giant Buddha Temple, housing China's largest indoor reclining Buddha (34.5m). Stay in Zhangye city and hire a car to the Danxia park (40km, 1 hour).
Getting to Silk Road
By Air
Multiple airports serve the Silk Road route: Xi'an Xianyang (XIY), Lanzhou Zhongchuan (LHW), Dunhuang Dunhuang (DNH), Urumqi Diwopu (URC), and Kashgar Kashi (KHG). Flights connect all these cities, but the most scenic route is overland. Dunhuang Airport has flights from Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Lanzhou. Kashgar Airport has flights from Urumqi (2 hours) and Beijing. For the full Silk Road experience, fly into Xi'an or Lanzhou and travel overland, flying out of Urumqi or Kashgar. Book domestic flights via Ctrip or airline websites.
By Train
High-speed rail connects Xi'an to Lanzhou (3h) and Lanzhou to Urumqi (10-11h on the Lanxin high-speed line). The high-speed train to Dunhuang requires a transfer at Liuyuan South Station (conventional train to Dunhuang, 2 hours). Conventional trains connect Urumqi to Kashgar (24-30 hours). The high-speed line to Kashgar is under construction. For the Gansu Corridor (Lanzhou-Jiayuguan-Dunhuang), high-speed trains are available to Jiayuguan South (4 hours from Lanzhou). Book via 12306.cn. The train journey through the Gansu Corridor offers views of the Qilian Mountains and desert landscapes.
By Bus
Long-distance buses connect Silk Road cities, but trains are generally preferred for comfort and speed. Buses from Dunhuang to Jiayuguan (4 hours) and from Jiayuguan to Zhangye (3 hours) are alternatives to trains. Buses from Urumqi to Kashgar (24 hours) are not recommended over flights. Within the Gansu Corridor, buses connect smaller towns not served by rail. For remote sites like the Bingling Temple (near Lanzhou), buses or hired cars are the only option. Your hotel can arrange car hire with a driver for intercity travel.
Local Transport
Within Silk Road cities, taxis are inexpensive (starting at 6-8 RMB). In Dunhuang, taxis to the Echoing Sand Dunes cost 10 RMB (5 minutes from town). In Kashgar, the Old Town is walkable; taxis to the Sunday Bazaar cost 5-10 RMB. For intercity travel along the Silk Road, a combination of high-speed rail (Xi'an-Lanzhou-Urumqi) and flights (Urumqi-Kashgar) is most efficient. For the Gansu Corridor attractions (Danxia, Jiayuguan, Mogao Caves), hire a car with a driver from the nearest city. Car rental with driver costs 500-800 RMB/day. English-speaking guides can be arranged through travel agencies in Xi'an or Dunhuang.
