Great Wall of China: Complete Visitor Guide
Everything you need to know about visiting the Great Wall — which section to choose, how to get there, and insider tips.
History of the Great Wall
The Great Wall of China is not a single wall but a series of fortifications built over 2,000 years. The earliest sections date to the 7th century BC. The most famous sections were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The total length of all sections exceeds 21,000 km, though the Ming sections most visitors see total about 8,850 km.
Mutianyu Section (Recommended)
Mutianyu is the best section for most visitors. It's well-preserved, less crowded than Badaling, and offers cable car access. The wall here winds through forested mountains with 22 watchtowers. A toboggan slide provides a fun descent. Travel time from Beijing: 1.5 hours. Best visited in morning or late afternoon.
Badaling Section
Badaling is the most visited section, easily accessible by train from Beijing (1 hour). It's well-restored with cable cars and handrails, making it suitable for elderly and disabled visitors. However, it can be extremely crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Visit early morning or off-season for a better experience.
Jinshanling Section
Jinshanling is perfect for hikers and photographers. It's about 2.5 hours from Beijing and features both restored and original sections. The 10km hike from Jinshanling to Simatai offers stunning views with fewer crowds. Best visited in spring or autumn. Bring water and wear hiking shoes.
What to Bring
Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip. Bring sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. Carry at least 1 liter of water per person. Pack snacks and a light jacket (it can be windy and cooler on the wall). A camera is essential. In winter, bring warm layers, gloves, and a scarf.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April-May): Mild weather, green hills, fewer crowds. Summer (June-August): Hot and crowded, but lush scenery. Autumn (September-November): Best weather and golden foliage, but busy. Winter (December-February): Cold but stunning with snow, almost no crowds. Avoid Chinese public holidays.
