Sichuan Travel Guide
Sichuan Province Travel Guide
Sichuan is one of China's most diverse provinces, offering everything from giant pandas and spicy cuisine to alpine wilderness and sacred Buddhist mountains. A comprehensive Sichuan itinerary spans 7-10 days. Days 1-3: Chengdu (pandas, teahouses, hotpot, Leshan Buddha day trip). Days 4-5: Mount Emei (cloud sea, golden summit, ancient temples). Days 6-7: Jiuzhaigou Valley (fairy-tale colorful lakes and waterfalls). Days 8-9: Daocheng Yading (alpine wilderness at 4,000m with sacred snow peaks). For a shorter trip, focus on Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou (5 days). For the adventurous, the western Sichuan route (Chengdu-Daocheng-Yading) offers Tibet-like scenery without Tibet permits. The best seasons are April-June and September-November; summer is ideal for Jiuzhaigou when the lakes are most vibrant.
Jiuzhaigou Valley: Fairy-Tale Lakes
Jiuzhaigou Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is China's most beautiful alpine landscape, featuring 108 turquoise, emerald, and sapphire lakes connected by waterfalls, all set beneath snow-capped peaks. The valley is Y-shaped with three main branches: Shuzheng Valley (lower, with the most lakes and the Nuorilang Waterfall), Rize Valley (upper, with the Five-Color Pond and Long Lake), and Zechawa Valley (the most pristine). Park buses (included in ticket) run to the farthest points; walk downhill back. Allow a full day (7-8 hours). The lakes get their colors from dissolved calcium carbonate and algae. Visit in October for the most spectacular colors when autumn foliage reflects in the turquoise water. Book tickets at least 3 days ahead (169 RMB high season). The park has a daily visitor limit; arrive early. Photography is stunning everywhere, but the Five-Color Pond and Mirror Lake are the highlights.
Mount Emei: Sacred Buddhist Mountain
Mount Emei, one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, is a 3,099m peak covered in ancient temples, misty forests, and cloud seas. The mountain requires 2 days: Day 1: Take the bus to Leidongping, then walk to the Golden Summit (Jinding) at 3,077m — visit the 48m golden statue of Samantabhadra and watch the cloud sea (best at sunrise). Stay overnight at the summit hotel. Day 2: Watch the sunrise over the cloud sea, then descend via cable car and bus, stopping at Wannian Temple (the oldest temple, with a 1,000-year-old bronze elephant statue) and Qingyin Pavilion. The mountain is home to Tibetan macaques — keep food hidden and don't approach them. Bring warm clothing (it's below freezing at the summit even in summer) and altitude sickness medication. The Baoguo Temple at the base is the mountain's largest temple. For the adventurous, a 2-day hike from base to summit through ancient forests is possible.
Daocheng Yading: Alpine Wilderness
Daocheng Yading, at 4,000m elevation in western Sichuan, is a pristine alpine reserve with three sacred snow peaks (Chenresig at 6,032m, Jambeyang at 5,958m, and Chanadorje at 5,958m), glacial lakes, and wildflower meadows. The classic trek is a 1-2 day route: the short route (6-8 hours) visits Luorong Pasture, Milk Lake, and Five-Color Lake beneath the three peaks. The long route (2 days, 22km) circumnavigates the peaks. Acclimatize in Daocheng town (3,750m) for 2 days before trekking. The drive from Chengdu to Daocheng takes 2 days (or fly via Daocheng Yading Airport, the world's highest civilian airport at 4,411m). The best season is May-October; September-October offers golden meadows and clear mountain views. Bring altitude sickness medication, warm clothing, and a sleeping bag. The scenery rivals the Himalayas without requiring Tibet permits.
Sichuan Cuisine Deep Dive
Sichuan cuisine is one of China's eight great culinary traditions, famous for its bold use of chili and Sichuan peppercorns (which produce a tingling numbness called "ma la"). Beyond the famous hotpot and mapo tofu, explore: dan dan noodles (noodles with spicy minced pork and preserved vegetables), twice-cooked pork (pork belly stir-fried with leeks and bean paste), chuan chuan (skewer hotpot where you cook your own skewers in a shared pot), and fuqi feipian (cold beef offal in chili oil). For the adventurous, try rabbit head (a Chengdu street food favorite), spicy brain, and blood curd in hotpot. The Sichuan Cuisine Museum in Pi County offers cooking classes where you learn to make classic dishes and grind your own chili bean paste. For the best hotpot experience, order yuanyang (split pot) with spicy and mild broths, and try beef tripe, duck intestines, and lotus root.
Getting to Sichuan
By Air
Chengdu has two airports: Shuangliu (CTU, 16km southwest) and Tianfu (TFU, 50km southeast). Both serve extensive domestic and international routes. For Jiuzhaigou, fly to Huanglong Airport (JZH, 1 hour from Chengdu, 3,448m elevation) — book early as flights are limited. For Daocheng Yading, fly to Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY, 1 hour from Chengdu) — the world's highest civilian airport at 4,411m. Flights to Jiuzhaigou and Daocheng are weather-dependent and frequently delayed; have backup plans. Airport shuttle buses and metro connections serve both Chengdu airports.
By Train
Chengdu East Station is the high-speed rail hub, with trains to Xi'an (3-4h), Chongqing (1.5h), Leshan (1h), and Emeishan (1.5h). A high-speed line to Jiuzhaigou (Huanglongjiuzhai Station) opened in 2024, reducing travel time to 2 hours. For Daocheng, no train is available; fly or take a 2-day bus. The Chengdu-Lhasa train departs from Chengdu Station (43 hours). Book via 12306.cn. For Mount Emei, take the high-speed train to Emeishan Station (1.5 hours from Chengdu East), then a bus to the mountain base.
By Bus
Buses to Jiuzhaigou depart from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station (8-10 hours, 170 RMB) — the journey passes through earthquake recovery zones and mountain scenery. Buses to Daocheng depart from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station (2 days with an overnight stop). Buses to Mount Emei depart from Xinnanmen (2 hours, 50 RMB). Buses to Leshan depart from Xinnanmen (2 hours). For western Sichuan destinations (Tagong, Litang, Daocheng), buses are infrequent and slow; hiring a 4WD with a driver is recommended for the rugged mountain roads.
Local Transport
In Chengdu, the metro (13+ lines) covers all attractions. Taxis start at 8-9 RMB. Didi ride-hailing is widely available. For Jiuzhaigou, park buses inside the valley are included in the entrance ticket. For Mount Emei, mountain buses and cable cars are available (separate fees). For Daocheng Yading, park buses run from the entrance to the trekking start point. For inter-city travel in Sichuan, high-speed rail (Chengdu-Leshan-Emeishan) or flights (Chengdu-Jiuzhaigou, Chengdu-Daocheng) are the best options. Car hire with driver (500-800 RMB/day) is recommended for western Sichuan road trips.
