Yunnan Province Itinerary Planning
Yunnan's diversity demands at least 7-10 days. Days 1-2: Kunming — Stone Forest, Green Lake Park, and Yuantong Temple. Days 3-4: Dali — Erhai Lake cycling, Dali Old Town, Three Pagodas, and Cangshan Mountain cable car. Days 5-7: Lijiang — Old Town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Blue Moon Valley, and Baisha Village. Days 8-9: Tiger Leaping Gorge 2-day hike. Days 10-11: Shangri-La — Songzanlin Monastery, Pudacuo National Park, and Tibetan culture. For a shorter trip, fly directly to Lijiang and focus on the Lijiang-Shangri-La corridor (5 days). For tea enthusiasts, add Xishuangbanna (Pu'er tea mountains) in the south. For ethnic culture, add Yuanyang rice terraces (Hani minority) in the southeast.
Lijiang Old Town Exploration
Lijiang Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a maze of cobblestone streets, canals, and Naxi minority wooden houses. The town is best explored at dawn (before 8am) when the streets are quiet and the morning light is magical. Key spots: Sifang Square (the central plaza), Mu Residence (the Naxi chieftain's palace), and Black Dragon Pool Park (with its iconic view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in the pool). Climb Lion Hill (Shizi Shan) for a panoramic view of the old town rooftops. The Baisha Village, 10km north, is the original Naxi settlement with the famous Baisha murals (15th-17th century Buddhist paintings). For Naxi culture, attend the Naxi Ancient Music performance in the evening — musicians playing centuries-old instruments and songs. Stay in a traditional Naxi courtyard guesthouse for the full experience.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) is Lijiang's most iconic natural attraction, a 5,596m snow-capped massif. The cable car to 4,506m (Glacier Park) offers close-up views of glaciers and the highest peaks — book tickets at least 1 day ahead (172 RMB including environmental bus). Bring warm clothing and oxygen canisters (available at the base). The Blue Moon Valley at the mountain's base features a series of turquoise lakes formed by glacial meltwater — stunning on a sunny day. The Impressions Lijiang show, directed by Zhang Yimou, features 500 Naxi performers against the mountain backdrop — book premium seats. For a less crowded alternative, the Spruce Meadow cable car (3,200m) offers forest walks and meadow views. Visit in the morning for the best chance of clear mountain views; clouds typically build by afternoon.
Tiger Leaping Gorge Hiking Guide
Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the world's deepest gorges, with the Yangtze River thundering between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains. The 2-day high trail hike is one of China's best trekking experiences. Day 1: Start at Qiaotou, hike to Naxi Family Guesthouse (3-4 hours), then continue to Halfway Guesthouse (2-3 hours) for overnight. Day 2: Hike to the Middle Rapids (Tina's) via the famous 28 Bends section (3-4 hours), then descend to the river for the most dramatic views. The high trail offers spectacular gorge views from 2,000m above the river. For a shorter experience, the lower road reaches the Middle Rapids directly by car (1 hour from Qiaotou). Best hiking season: April-June and September-November. Bring sunscreen, layers, and plenty of water. Guesthouses along the trail provide meals and rooms.
Shangri-La and Tibetan Culture
Shangri-La (Zhongdian), at 3,200m, is the northernmost destination in Yunnan and the gateway to the Tibetan world. Acclimatize for 1 day before strenuous activities. Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, is modeled after the Potala Palace and houses over 600 monks — visit in the morning for the best light and fewer tourists. Pudacuo National Park, China's first national park, offers boardwalk trails through alpine meadows, lakes, and old-growth forests (take the park bus to the farthest point, then walk back). Dukezong Old Town features the world's largest prayer wheel (turn it clockwise for merit). For Tibetan cuisine, try yak meat hotpot, butter tea, and tsampa. The Shangri-La to Lhasa overland route (7-10 days) is one of Asia's epic road journeys for the adventurous.
Getting to Yunnan
By Air
Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is Yunnan's main hub, with flights from all major Chinese cities and international routes to Southeast Asia, South Korea, and Japan. Lijiang Sanyan Airport (LJG) has direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Kunming. Dali Airport (DLU) and Shangri-La Airport (DIG) also have regional flights. For inter-city travel within Yunnan, flights between Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, and Shangri-La are available but short (45-60 minutes). Book domestic flights via Ctrip or airline websites.
By Train
High-speed rail connects Kunming to Dali (2 hours) and Lijiang (3.5 hours), making train travel the most convenient option between these cities. The Kunming-Dali high-speed line opened in 2018, and the extension to Lijiang in 2019. A high-speed line to Shangri-La is under construction. Conventional trains connect Kunming to Chengdu (18h), Beijing (34h), and Shanghai (37h). Book via 12306.cn. The train journey from Kunming to Lijiang passes through beautiful countryside and is recommended over flying for the scenery and convenience.
By Bus
Long-distance buses connect all Yunnan cities. Kunming to Dali (4-5 hours by express bus), Dali to Lijiang (3 hours), and Lijiang to Shangri-La (4 hours) are the most common routes. Buses to Tiger Leaping Gorge (Qiaotou) depart from Lijiang (2 hours). Buses to Yuanyang rice terraces depart from Kunming (6-7 hours). For Xishuangbanna, flights from Kunming (1 hour) are recommended over the 8-hour bus. Express buses are comfortable and air-conditioned; book at the bus station or through your hotel.
Local Transport
In Kunming, the metro has 6+ lines covering major attractions. In Lijiang, the old town is pedestrian-only; walk or take electric carts. Taxis from the old town to attractions start at 8 RMB. In Dali, e-bike and bicycle rentals (30-50 RMB/day) are ideal for the Erhai Lake loop. In Shangri-La, taxis are the main transport within the city. For inter-city travel, high-speed rail (Kunming-Dali-Lijiang) or buses are the options. Ride-hailing via Didi is available in Kunming and Lijiang. For Tiger Leaping Gorge, hire a car from Lijiang or take a bus to Qiaotou.
