China Entry & Exit Guide: Customs & Immigration
Complete guide to entering and exiting China, including customs regulations, immigration procedures, and what to declare.
Arrival Procedures
Upon arrival at a Chinese airport, follow the signs to immigration. Have your passport, visa, and arrival card ready. The arrival card is usually distributed on the plane. After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then through customs. Most tourists use the green "nothing to declare" channel.
Customs Regulations
You can bring in duty-free: 400 cigarettes or 100 cigars, 1.5 liters of alcohol, and personal items up to ¥5,000. You must declare: cash exceeding $5,000 (or equivalent), gold over 50g, commercial goods, and restricted items. Prohibited items include fresh food, certain medications, and publications deemed inappropriate.
Health Requirements
No specific vaccinations are required for entry. However, if traveling from a yellow fever endemic area, a vaccination certificate is required. It's recommended to be up-to-date on routine vaccines. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
Departure Procedures
When departing China, arrive at the airport 2-3 hours before international flights. You'll need to pass through immigration (have passport and departure card ready), then security. Tax refund is available for tourists who purchased goods totaling over ¥500 from tax-free shops. Present goods, receipts, and tax refund form at the customs desk.
Registration Requirement
Foreigners must register their accommodation within 24 hours of arrival. If staying at a hotel, the hotel handles this automatically. If staying with friends or at a private residence, you must register at the local police station within 24 hours. Your guide can assist with this process.
Emergency Contacts
Police: 110. Ambulance: 120. Fire: 119. Tourist complaints: 12301. Your embassy in Beijing can assist with lost passports or legal issues. Keep copies of your passport and visa separate from the originals. Register with your country's embassy travel program before departure.
