Li River Cruise: Everything You Need to Know
The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of China's most iconic journeys, passing through a landscape that has inspired Chinese painters for centuries. Boats depart from Zhujiang Pier (30 minutes from Guilin city center) at 9:30am and arrive at Yangshuo around 1:30pm. Book tickets in advance through your hotel or a travel agency — foreign tourists typically pay 360-450 RMB depending on boat class. The boat includes a simple lunch, but bring your own snacks. The most scenic section is between Xingping and Yangshuo, where the karst peaks are most dramatic — this is the scenery depicted on the 20 RMB banknote. Sit on the upper deck's open area for the best photos. The boat has both indoor seating with AC and outdoor viewing areas.
Yangshuo Countryside Activities
Yangshuo's countryside offers some of China's best outdoor activities. Rent a bicycle or e-bike (30-50 RMB/day) and cycle along the Yulong River, stopping at the 600-year-old Yulong Bridge. Bamboo rafting on the Yulong River is a peaceful 2-hour experience, drifting between karst peaks and water buffalo. Rock climbing is popular on the limestone peaks — China Climb and Spider Cave offer routes for all levels. For a unique experience, take a cooking class at the Yangshuo Cooking School, where you'll visit a local market, then learn to cook dishes like beer fish and stir-fried seasonal vegetables. The Impression Sanjie Liu show, directed by Zhang Yimou, uses the karst mountains and river as a natural stage with 600 performers — book premium seats for the best view.
Longji Rice Terraces Guide
The Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces are among China's most spectacular, carved into mountainsides over 500 years ago by the Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities. The two main viewing areas are Ping'an Zhuang Village (easier access, 2 hours from Guilin) and Jinkeng Red Yao Village (more remote, more spectacular). At Ping'an, the Seven Stars with Moon and Nine Dragons and Five Tigers viewpoints are the highlights. At Jinkeng, the Golden Buddha Peak offers the most dramatic panorama. Visit in spring (May-June) when the terraces are filled with water reflecting the sky, or in autumn (September-October) when the rice turns golden. Cable cars are available at Jinkeng. Wear hiking shoes — the paths are steep and can be slippery. Stay overnight in a village guesthouse to experience local culture and see the terraces at sunrise.
Guilin Food and Culture
Guilin cuisine is characterized by its use of fresh river ingredients and subtle flavors. Guilin rice noodles (guilin mifen) are the city's signature breakfast — thin rice noodles in a clear broth with pickled vegetables, peanuts, and chili. Try them at Chongshan Rice Noodles or any local shop with a queue. Beer fish, a Yangshuo specialty, is made with Li River fish cooked in beer with tomatoes and chili — try it at the Cloud 9 restaurant on West Street. Stuffed Li River snails are a unique local delicacy. For fruit lovers, the region produces excellent persimmons, pomelos, and chestnuts. The oil tea (you cha) of the Yao people is a traditional drink made from tea leaves fried in oil with water — an acquired taste but culturally significant.
