Gansu Travel Guide
Gansu Province Travel Guide
Gansu is the heart of the Silk Road in China, a narrow province stretching 1,000km from southeast to northwest. A 7-9 day itinerary: Days 1-2: Lanzhou (Yellow River, Gansu Provincial Museum, beef noodles). Day 3: Xiahe (Labrang Monastery, Sangke Grassland). Days 4-5: Zhangye (Danxia Rainbow Mountains, Giant Buddha Temple). Day 6: Jiayuguan (Great Wall western gate, Overhanging Great Wall). Days 7-8: Dunhuang (Mogao Caves, Echoing Sand Dunes, Crescent Lake, Yumen Pass). The high-speed rail line from Lanzhou to Urumqi passes through Zhangye, Jiayuguan, and Dunhuang (Liuyuan Station), making train travel efficient. The best season is May-October; September offers comfortable temperatures and clear skies. For Tibetan culture, focus on the Gannan region in southern Gansu (Xiahe, Langmusi, Zhagana).
Labrang Monastery and Gannan Tibetan Culture
Labrang Monastery in Xiahe is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism, and the most important Tibetan cultural site outside Tibet. Founded in 1709, the monastery complex has 60 halls and housed over 3,000 monks at its peak. The monastery is a living religious center — join pilgrims on the 3km circumambulation path (kora) around the complex, spinning prayer wheels. Visit the morning chanting session (around 6am) and the afternoon debate courtyard. The Gongtang Pagoda offers panoramic views of the monastery and surrounding mountains. The nearby Sangke Grassland offers horse riding and yurt stays with Tibetan nomadic families. For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, visit Langmusi (a small town straddling the Gansu-Sichuan border with two monasteries and stunning alpine scenery) and Zhagana (a hidden valley of stone peaks and Tibetan villages).
Zhangye Danxia and Giant Buddha
The Zhangye Danxia Landform (Rainbow Mountains) is Gansu's most spectacular natural wonder — rolling hills striped with vivid red, orange, yellow, and blue mineral layers. Visit at sunset for the most intense colors (1-2 hours before sunset). The park has four viewing platforms; Platform 4 is the best for sunset photos. Allow 3-4 hours. The nearby Binggou Danxia offers a different landscape of towering rock pillars and deep ravines. In Zhangye city, the Giant Buddha Temple houses China's largest indoor reclining Buddha (34.5m long, with detailed disciples painted on the walls behind). The temple also has a collection of Buddhist scriptures and artifacts. Zhangye is a pleasant city on the Heihe River; try the local beef noodles and lamb skewers. The Zhangye Wetland Park offers a peaceful contrast to the desert landscapes.
Dunhuang: The Silk Road's Greatest Oasis
Dunhuang was the most important oasis on the Silk Road, where trade routes converged before splitting to the north and south of the Taklamakan Desert. Beyond the Mogao Caves and Echoing Sand Dunes, explore: the Dunhuang Museum (Silk Road artifacts and replicas of Mogao Cave art), the Yumen Pass (Jade Gate Pass, a Han dynasty frontier post on the Great Wall), and the Yangguan Pass (another ancient frontier post with a museum and beacon tower). The Yadan National Geological Park (Devil's City), 180km from Dunhuang, features bizarre wind-eroded rock formations over a vast area — visit at sunset for the most dramatic light. The Dunhuang Night Market is excellent for local food and souvenirs. Try donkey meat noodles, yellow noodles with donkey meat, and apricot tea. For a unique experience, book a camel trek into the desert for an overnight camp with stargazing.
Jiayuguan: The Great Wall's Western Gate
Jiayuguan Fort is the westernmost gate of the Great Wall, a formidable Ming dynasty (1372 AD) fortress guarding the narrowest point of the Hexi Corridor. The fort complex includes the inner and outer walls, watchtowers, and a museum. Climb the fort walls for views of the Qilian Mountains to the south and the Gobi Desert to the north. Nearby, the Overhanging Great Wall (Xuanbi Changcheng) is a section of wall built on a steep ridge, appearing to hang from the cliff. The First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall marks the westernmost defensive position. Allow a half-day for the fort and surrounding sites. Jiayuguan is also a modern steel industry city; the Jiayuguan Museum covers both the Great Wall history and the city's industrial development. The high-speed rail station (Jiayuguan South) connects to Lanzhou (4 hours) and Dunhuang (via Liuyuan transfer).
Getting to Gansu
By Air
Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW) is 70km from the city center, with flights from all major Chinese cities and some international routes. The airport is connected by high-speed rail to Lanzhou city (18 minutes, the first airport-to-city high-speed link in China). Dunhuang Airport (DNH) has flights from Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Lanzhou. Jiayuguan Airport (JGN) has limited flights from Beijing and Xi'an. For Zhangye, the nearest airport is Zhangye Ganzhou Airport (YZY) with flights from Lanzhou and Xi'an. For Xiahe, fly to Lanzhou and take a bus (4 hours). Book domestic flights via Ctrip.
By Train
The Lanxin (Lanzhou-Urumqi) high-speed railway connects Lanzhou to Zhangye West (1.5h), Jiayuguan South (3h), and Liuyuan South (4.5h, transfer to Dunhuang). Conventional trains also serve the Gansu Corridor. High-speed trains from Xi'an to Lanzhou take 3 hours. From Lanzhou to Urumqi, the high-speed train takes 10-11 hours. For Xiahe (Labrang Monastery), there is no train; take a bus from Lanzhou (4 hours). Book via 12306.cn. The high-speed train through the Gansu Corridor offers views of the Qilian Mountains, desert, and Great Wall remnants.
By Bus
Buses from Lanzhou to Xiahe (Labrang Monastery) depart from Lanzhou South Bus Station (4 hours, 75 RMB). Buses from Xiahe to Langmusi (3 hours) and Zhagana (via Diebu, 4 hours) serve the Gannan Tibetan region. Buses from Lanzhou to Zhangye (6 hours) are an alternative to high-speed rail. Buses from Dunhuang to Liuyuan Station (for train connections) take 2 hours. For the Gannan region, buses are infrequent; hiring a car with a driver from Lanzhou or Xiahe is recommended (500-700 RMB/day).
Local Transport
In Lanzhou, buses and the metro (2+ lines) cover the city. Taxis start at 8 RMB. In Dunhuang, taxis to the Echoing Sand Dunes cost 5 RMB (5 minutes from town); to the Mogao Caves, 20 RMB (25 minutes). In Zhangye, taxis to the Danxia park cost 40 RMB (one way, 40km). In Xiahe, the monastery is walkable from town; taxis to Sangke Grassland cost 30-50 RMB. For inter-city travel along the Gansu Corridor, high-speed rail is the best option. For the Gannan Tibetan region, hire a car with a driver from Lanzhou. Car rental with driver costs 500-700 RMB/day. Roads in Gansu are generally well-paved.
