The 12 Zodiac Animals

The Chinese zodiac consists of 12 animals in a repeating 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each year is associated with an animal sign, and each animal has distinct personality traits. The order was determined by a legendary race across a river organized by the Jade Emperor.

How to Find Your Sign

Your zodiac sign is determined by your birth year. However, the Chinese zodiac follows the lunar calendar, so the new year begins in late January or early February. If you were born before the Chinese New Year of your birth year, you belong to the previous year's sign. For example, someone born on January 15, 2025 would be a Dragon, not a Snake.

Zodiac Compatibility

In Chinese astrology, certain animal signs are more compatible than others. The best matches are based on the concept of "three harmonies": Rat-Dragon-Monkey, Ox-Snake-Rooster, Tiger-Horse-Dog, and Rabbit-Goat-Pig. Opposite signs (six pairs directly across the zodiac wheel) are considered the least compatible, though this is just traditional folklore.

Cultural Significance

The zodiac plays a significant role in Chinese culture. It influences naming, marriage compatibility, career choices, and even the timing of major events. During one's zodiac year (benmingnian), it's traditional to wear red clothing or accessories for good luck, as the year is believed to bring challenges. The zodiac also appears in art, literature, and New Year celebrations.
